I started going to school half a day two years ago so I could work the rest of it till three a.m. and sleep for four hours, and then go to school. I worked at least three days during the week, and all weekend long. I made twelve dollars an hour so I could pay the rent.
The rest of the money I had was for groceries, and I made my lunches at home. I skipped breakfast so I could go to school earlier so I could sit with the guidance counselor. We had been meeting in the mornings since last year when my father died. We didn’t talk much.

Alex in wonderland 11“Who is it?” The voice was small. I looked at the door knob, expecting to see another person besides my own reflection looking back at me on the copper surface. The thing I wasn’t expecting was a small person directly under the knob. She had little round ears poking out of her light brown hair. She wasn’t any bigger than a two year old, but not built like one. She was built like a very thin young woman, and a small whip-like tail curled around her waist where her little hands grasped it nervously. “It’s Kendra, honey. Don’t worry. Alex in wonderland 10We bolted through the living area. I watched baffled as the walls jumped out of the way clearing the space to the front door. The door opened itself and we were suddenly in a very different yard than the one I had been traipsing through earlier. I pulled my hand out of her grasp as I looked into the landscape around me. It was so bright out here… I looked back at the house and a sweet but unbelievably tiny two-story cottage looked back at me. The outside was incredibly smaller than the inside, which was hugely spacious.
